opened in 1980 it was originally intended that it should be built in Te Atatu. At the time

the land available was locked up with the Harbour Board and it was seen as too great a

task to free it up for the construction of a marae. Hoani Waititi marae was built in Oratia

and a well-established community facility has been founded.

The marae is to be located on 2.5ha of land at the base of the Te Atatu Peninsula.

Auckland Council has identified the marae site in the Management Plan for Orangihina

Park and in the Auckland Unitary Plan.

SERVING MĀORI AND DIVERSE POPULATIONS

The vision of the Coalition identified a facility that would serve not only the needs of the

local Māori population but the diverse population of the local area, of Auckland as a

whole and of visitors, particularly dignitaries to the area.

VISION OF SUSTAINABILITY

The vision of the Coalition was not restricted to the uses of the facility and the

requirements of the population it serves. Working with local architect Maurits Kelderman

from designTribe, the vision extended to a unique and highly attractive facility for Māori

and the broader community in a prime location.
